Bhubaneswar. Manipal Hospital BhubaneswarKapileswar Sahoo, a 45-year-old resident of Bhubaneswar, presented with severe right hip pain and restricted movement following an accident a month earlier. A delayed diagnosis led to progressive deterioration of hip function, significantly affecting his ability to walk, squat, or sit on the floor—activities essential to his daily life and work. As the condition worsened and mobility declined, he sought treatment at Manipal Hospital Bhubaneswar.
After clinical evaluation, the orthopaedic team led by Dr. Sunil Kumar Dash, Senior Consultant & Director – Orthopaedics, recommended a total hip replacement using the direct anterior approach with robotic-assisted navigation, considering the patient’s age, activity level, and functional requirements. The muscle-sparing approach allows access to the hip through natural anatomical planes, reducing tissue disruption, blood loss, and recovery time.
Robotic-assisted navigation provided real-time guidance on implant positioning, leg length equality, and joint alignment—key factors influencing stability, biomechanics, and long-term outcomes, while reducing the risk of dislocation and premature wear.
Post-surgery, the patient experienced minimal pain, began mobilisation the following day, and was discharged within three days. Follow-up showed steady recovery, with independent walking and restoration of floor-level sitting, indicating meaningful improvement in functional mobility.
Commenting on the outcome, Dr. Dash said, “In working-age patients, restoring functional movement is as important as relieving pain. Precision and minimal tissue disruption are central to achieving durable recovery.”
This case highlights the importance of timely diagnosis and tailored surgical strategies in restoring mobility and independence after complex hip injuries.
