Bengaluru. Aster CMI Hospital has once again showcased its clinical excellence by successfully performing a complex surgical procedure to remove a massive 9 kg ovarian cyst from a 47-year-old woman. The surgery not only relieved the patient of a life-threatening condition but also preserved her hormonal health.
The patient had been living with a distended abdomen, assuming it was weight gain, until a casual remark by a stranger prompted her to undergo an ultrasound. The scan revealed a large fluid-filled cyst occupying nearly the entire abdominal cavity. Upon further evaluation, the medical team diagnosed a massive left ovarian cyst measuringapproximately 20×20 cm, which was compressing major abdominal vessels and organs, leading to breathing difficulties, hypotension, and restricted mobility.
Given the severity of her condition, the Surgical and Gynae Oncology teamcomprising Dr. Mythili Kundur, Associate Consultant – Surgical Oncology (Gynecology), and Dr. Elvis P. Joseph, Associate Consultant – Surgical Oncology, performed a staging laparotomy to remove the cyst intact. The surgery revealed a 9 kg ovarian mass extending from the upper to the lower abdomen. The team also ensured fertility preservation by retaining the patient’s other ovary to maintain hormonal balance. A frozen section during surgery indicated a borderline malignancy, and the final biopsy report is awaited. The patient has since recovered well and is expected to be discharged shortly.
Dr. Darshan Patil, Consultant – Surgical Oncology, Aster CMI Hospital, Bengaluru, said, it is extremely rare to encounter an ovarian cyst of this size today, especially one weighing over 9 kilograms. The patient was experiencing significant pressure on her major blood vessels, which could have led to serious complications if left untreated. Through meticulous surgical planning and precision, our team was able to remove the cyst completely while preserving her hormonal function and ensuring a smooth recovery. This case highlights the importance of early detection through timely imaging and consultation.
